The Deer of Japan…

^ ‘Oooh I’m a messenger of the Gods, feed me!’ D:

I encountered Japan’s sacred Sika deer twice during my trip; at Miyajima and at Nara. Encountered. Their Bambi eyes and adorable squeaks had me smitten. But the reality of their circumstances is not Continue reading

Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine

^ Torii gate at Itsukushima shrine. Fun fact: it does not float, nor is it buried in the sand. The pillars holding it up are just so gosh darn heavy that they sit on the sea bed and stay put.

It makes me sad to think how we almost missed Miyajima (‘shrine island’) and it’s floating Itsukushima shrine. I had read somewhere that dusk is the most perfect time to be there and decided that I absolutely had to see the floating torii Continue reading

^ Excellent tempura, udon, and dipping broth, all vegetarian – Omen, Kyoto

Before departing for Japan I had been blissfully and determinedly maintaining my ignorance on the country’s recognition of vegetarianism. I didn’t want to consider a scenario in which I would not be spending three weeks solid consuming all the ramen, gyoza, and katsu my belly could contain.

We were initially drawn to Tomonoura by Hayao Miyazaki (co-founder of Studio Ghibli) and his 2008 film ‘Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea’. ‘Ponyo’ was written by Miyazaki after a sojourn in the port town which largely inspired the setting for the film. We hoped Continue reading

Tokyo > Fukuyama > Tomo-no-ura > Iwakuni > Miyajima > Hiroshima > Himeji > Kyoto > Higashiyama > Nara > Arashiyama > Kawaguchi-ko > Mt. Fuji > Tokyo

Phew, it’s been some trip… so far! It’s night time and I’m sitting in the shadow of Mt. Fuji or Fujisan as he likes to be known. I only caught the briefest of glimpses of the gigantic mountain through dusky clouds as I arrived in Kawaguchi-ko. I already know I’m going to love it here. This series of posts was supposed to begin the second I arrived in my pokey Tokyo business hotel. But now, with two days left on my JR Pass, cramps in my feet, and an 11pm curfew at our minshuku, I guess it is as good a time as any to start writing it all down. Over the next few weeks you can look forward to: Continue reading
